The Intellect Academy has unveiled an open-air geo-ecological laboratory – a project made possible through partnerships with the Siberian State Industrial University (SibSIU) and the Siberian Mining and Metallurgical Company (SGMK).

What began as an experimental site has now become a full-fledged research hub. Together with university scientists and ecologists, schoolchildren have planted Siberian stone pines (cedars), larches, linden, and rowan trees, as well as spirea and ninebark shrubs.

The laboratory space is divided into several scientific zones. In the «apothecary garden, » students learn about the medicinal properties of herbs and shrubs. A climate project focuses on studying the resilience of native tree species to changing weather conditions. A phytomining zone will allow young researchers to explore how plants can extract valuable elements from the soil.

«Our students will be able to observe plant growth, study soils, and analyze their findings in laboratory settings, » said Vera Stukushina, Deputy Director for Scientific and Methodological Work at the Intellect Academy.

«Our primary goal is to spark an interest in science among the children. It is very possible that the future careers of ecologists, biologists, and researchers will begin right here, » said Irina Semina, PhD, Director of the Geoecology Center at SibSIU.

The experimental site will continue to expand, adding new plant species over time. This hands-on experience will enable Intellect Academy students to produce scientific papers and present their research findings and projects at competitions and conferences at various levels.
